rambutan, temples and boats

rambutan: a red hairy fruit that looks and
tastes similar to a lychee on the inside.  YUM!
look at the cute photo shoot i had with them

rambutan snowman

padang food!  so good, especially the beef rendang which you can't see in the picture.  basically it's food that sits out all day long unrefrigerated or heated and they bring it to your table and you eat what you want.  what you don't want gets put back on display and given to someone else who might want to eat it.  not very clean food but still really tasty and so awesome because you get to eat with your hands.

no, the camera wasn't tilted.

the chinese buddhist temple behind our house.  it was built thirty years ago and
i got to practice my chinese with the guy there.  very beautiful and well maintained.

what an amazing ceiling.  chinese people are the best.

wish i knew what this plant was.

i believe he's making bakso which is meatball soup.  can't verify that for sure but those round little meatballs in the window look like round little meatballs.  just looked up tekwan.  it's soup with fish balls.

gorgeous songket textiles at a handicraft store near the yoga studio we go to.  the prices
aren't too bad here at around $50 for a complete two piece songket.  normally they can be
well over $100 because it takes one person working six days a week for a month to
finish one piece.  the one i want is blown out by the fluorescent lighting but it's a
beautiful peach color with gold weaving.  this is by far the loveliest store i've been in so far.

we visited another buddhist temple and got to see this amazing view from the top
balcony.  staring out over this view of palembang is an enormous laughing buddha.

boats at the musi river.  the guys in yellow are rowers for some team i think.

they started taking pictures of us so i took a picture of them.

we took a little boat out onto the musi river for about an hour.  it cost 110,000 rupiah for three people which rounds out to be around $12.25.  it probably could have been cheaper but it's hard when they know you're a foreigner.  the sky and the weather were incredible and i had fun taking pictures of all the houses and the families along the river.  we went right during bathing time.  i didn't get any good pictures of it but  people do brush their teeth in the river.  they also poop in the river in their dockside outhouses that hover over the water just a few feet from where they brush their teeth.  anyway, it was one of the most enjoyable things i've done here so far so i was sad when it was over.

these kids were so cute and got so excited when we waved to them.  when i held
my camera up to take a picture they all jumped up and made this cool picture.

this is where we stopped to get more gas

the gas station had their own little monkey but it was really sad watching
it chained up to the house all stressed out and pacing back and forth.

we went to an exhibit near the museum about digs they did in some caves.  these are
real skeletons they brought over from jakarta just displayed outside.  no glass.  no
security, just the actual original artifacts disintegrating.  very interesting.

it was closed when we went but hopefully i'll get to see it soon
